Dance in India comprises the varied styles of dances in the country. The National Academy for performing arts, recognizes eight distinctive traditional dances as Indian classical dances, which might have origin in religious activities of distant past. The dancer acts out a story almost exclusively through gestures. Most of the classical dances enact stories from Hindu mythology.
The National Academy currently confers classical status on eight Indian classical dance styles:
-Bharatanatyam, dating back to 1000 BCE
-Kathak
-Kathakali, in the 17th century
-Kuchipudi
-Manipuri
-Mohiniyattam
-Odissi
-Sattriya
The tradition of dance has been codified and written during the period between 200 BCE and 200 CE in the Natyashastra and a performance is considered accomplished if it manages to evoke a rasa (emotion) among the audience by invoking a particular bhava(gesture or facial expression). In addition Contemporary dance in India encompasses a wide range of dance activities currently performed in India. It includes choreography for Indian cinema called Bollywood. With the introduction of sound to cinema in 1930, choreographed dance sequences became ubiquitous in Indian films.
